There is a lot of evidence in both research and practice that one of the biggest impediments to successful implementation of an organization’s strategy is the lack of commitment and buy-in of employees across all levels and parts of the organization. When strategy is developed in isolation (by a few leaders at the top) it often fails to reflect the real needs, insights, and challenges experienced across the organization.
An evidence-based approach to increasing the buy-in and commitment of employees is to use a 360-degree approach to strategic planning and development. This involves actively engaging people from different roles, departments, and levels of the organization, gathering feedback, incorporating diverse perspectives, and building ownership of the strategy. When employees see their input reflected in the final strategy, they are more likely to understand it, believe in it, and work toward its success.
